Having fun rotting my brain

I enjoy watching TV. I almost never *only* watch TV; I watch sideways. In other words, I'm always doing something else -- sewing, knitting, crocheting, typing a blog post, reading email, cook, clean and any number of other things. I try to limit my TV watching to 1 to 2 hours in a day, and aim to not watch at all 1 or 2 days a week. With out limits, I'd have the TV on all afternoon and evening. Now, I'm not willing to watch just anything. I'm not nearly as discriminating at Hubby, but I can be pretty picky. I have a limited set of shows that I watch, a few of which I will watch over and over again. I have a few movies like this, as well, ones I will watch over and over again, such that I have most lines memorized. I watch either via downloaded episodes or amazon prime streaming video. We had netflix, but when they upped the price, we cancelled it. In general, I prefer shows that have a mystery to be solved. I also *love* science fiction. I'm not currently watching all these shows, but these are all shows that I might watch at any point. And I tend to finish that show before moving onto the next.

Currently, I'm enjoying "Midsomer Murders". My Dad and his wife introduced this show to me over Thanksgiving break. Yes, its British, as are several of my loved shows. Its a murder mystery, in the classical sense. There is some of the "crime scene investigation" science, but its on the side lines. The mysteries are intricate and there are always details to notice. And of course, Barnaby (the main character) notices things that aren't obvious so he has some revelation to make at the end.

Occasionally, Peanut watches with me and we rot our brains together. We will talk about the colors, or what someone is doing, or what something means, so I figure that helps un-rot our brains... some... hopefully.

And now, I'm off to listen to The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. Radio Drama is my other beloved entertainment, but this is for another post.

  2. Come to South Africa and you'll be cured of TV watching-ha! We have 4 TV channels. Yes, you read that right. 4.

And with 11 official languages in the country, you may not understand all of the shows! Some have sub-titles in English and are quite good eg "7 de laan" Afrikaans daily soap that is unlike the usual American soaps. It shows people from all backgrounds getting along and doesn't have bedroom scenes.

Those who go for paid TV have many more options eg BBC, DSTv, Sky News, Fox, CNN, SuperSport, etc. with good shows, movies, documentaries, travel channels, international sport.

We tend to go for "Survivor" and "Amazing Race" or series we've acquired from our teenage son's downloads eg "House" and "Grey's Anatomy" or mystery/crime shows like "NCIS" or "CIS" or for my husband "Dexter" and "Weeds" (not the greatest for morals, I say).

In the past, we liked "Jag", "LA Law" and "Murder she wrote".

I grew up in the USA with a steady stream of American TV from Sat morning cartoons and "That Girl", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Rhoda", "Laugh-In", "I Dream of Jeanie", "The Brady Bunch", "My Three Sons" and "The Partridge Family", and talk shows like "Johnny Carson" and music-comedy shows like "The Carol Burnett Show". Somehow I squeezed in my homework around all of these and was a good student.

Thank goodness reading was and is a passion of mine and all of our family. It beats the screen hands-down.

Since Apartheid prevented TV from entering South Africa until the late 1970s, my South African husband grew up in the 1960s & 70s istening to radio serials (a throwback to yesteryear it sounded like). We like Cape Talk radio nowadays.
